What the other anon said. When Stampede finished airing Mandarake held an event at one of their stores where they gathered 90s-00s Trigun doujinshi and covered the front display. Around that time people started digging up old fan stationary and posters about Trigun fan events. It's more that at the time the '98 anime aired and Maximum was in publication we didn't have very good access to what Japanese fans were doing. Everything had to be passed along as hearsay. It's true that the west made the series a lot of money, and Nightow was overjoyed at the opportunity to have collectible figures made in the west and so on, leading to Badlands Rumble banking on a western license for some of its profits. However Badlands Rumble is still in western license limbo for many territories, they haven't even tried selling it to the UK despite having an English language dub, and only Japan got all of the cool limited editions and merchandising. They would not do that if there weren't enough Japanese fans to buy it.

Remember, nobody in Japan liked Cowboy Bebop either. That's why it turned up in various reader polls at the time.
