It's generic by modern standards, but you've gotta remember Stardust Crusaders was kind of the turning point between 80s shonen and 90s shonen in terms of storytelling. YYH was the first major post-Stardust Crusaders battle shonen, so it was able to refine a lot of what SC did.

Most notably, YYH was one of the first big shonen battle manga to actually attempt to balance the main cast and give them all proper character arcs. In 80s stuff like Kinnikuman, DBZ, and Saint Seiya, it was common to have a couple important characters, plus a lot of fodder who pretend to be important. Stardust Crusaders was a weird halfway point, where none of the main characters were neglected, but they were also mostly tagalong characters who were there to fight the guys Jotaro didn't.
