Its been that way much longer than that. A good chunk of American movies and media in the 90's were either based off a previous movie or some reboot of something from the 80's and 70's. Every decade goes through this nostalgia or romanticizing for the previous decade. The 90's was full of 80's and 70's nostalgia wank and the 80's was full of shows and movies romanticizing the 60's.

The difference back then though was the remakes and reboots had actual effort and didn't rely too much on CGI slop and their celebrities/actors were at their peak. The 2010's is when it became low effort
