Like the other anon said, you were a lot more likely to find actual, productive discussion with people that at least somewhat knew what they were talking about. Boards also had an actual identity and culture thanks to the fairly constant OC generation. BOOF threads on /k/, the tripfag that sold cars and would post stories on /o/, most boards had drawfags that would come and go. Sometimes shitposts would turn into glorious OC, like this video I made years ago. This started as a mild shitpost and as the thread went on, we ended up writing a full parody. About half the lines were written by me, another anon recorded the audio, and then I synced it with the video.
