The best ones tend to be "écoles généralistes" which means that you learn a shitton of math and physics, but don't really know much about the industry. Smaller schools, on the other hand, tend to be more specialized.

Definitely. You first have to get through a written competitive exam, and then, if you succeed, there is an oral exam. There isn't actually a single exam for all school, instead, there are at least 4 main ones(X/ENS, CCMP, CCS and CCINP) and many smaller ones (E3A, CESI, Puissance Alpha, ... most of these are meme tier). Some of them feature tests that assess completely irrelevant skills like philosophy, or your ability to swim. I've been told that a guy was apparently asked to change brake pads at the oral exam for the ENSAM, and considering how spergy that particular school is, that may very well be true.

Usually 2 years, although a lot of people retake the second year in order to get better schools. Cram schools are very competitive, and quite a few people give up within the first year. The worst students are usually not allowed to get into the second year.
