"DEI" is primarily the concern of one specific political group (pro-Trump, usually American), it's disingenuous to pretend otherwise. If you don't want people to think of you politically, you can't put up a big banner going "btw, here are my politics, but no politics guys :)"

This isn't a moral judgement, it's a practical one: If you want a project to be "apolitical" you need to think about it seriously. You can't blow a dogwhistle that tells everyone what you think and then go "but no politics :)", you have to actually leave politics out of it. You need to think like a lawyer or a HR-director: "discussions must relate exclusively to the program, off topic discussions may be removed without warning" - bang, carte blanche to moderate as you please while maintaining a vernier of neutrality.
