In motion, it looks basically identical to the source.

I store BOTH versions lol. I have no need for the AV1 myself. I am doing this solely for others.
I know preservation is important, which is also part of why I store the originals myself.
And most of the people who download the compressed videos are probably the kind who wouldn't download it if it wasn't small. And it's better to have it archived in some manner, rather than none.
Think of the bigger picture, rather than your own hatred for compression.
People who download compressed will find compressed videos other places. So why not give them something that actually looks good?

A few problems with that. 4K has been around a long time and 1080p will still remain common for many years to come.
After 1080p, you start getting diminishing returns, 1440p is the perfect resolution (Unless you're in the 0.1% with a gigantic TV).
But like I said, I don't touch resolution...
Decoding a video does not affect it at all lol. Encoding affects video.

Don't advice random people to buy random old HDDs... That's a terrible advice.
And while storage is generally cheap, it's important to consider the fact that people generally store more than just 1 thing. While others are too poor to afford anything decent.
I may have about 40TB or so of storage, but while I have a lot of HMVs, that only makes up for a small portion of my storage.
