I would say it was longer than that - in fact, starting at around 1999, and lasting until 2015 or so. You had the widest variety, and it was also when Japan was at its most depraved. You had all sorts of studios pumping out tons of great titles, vanilla and rape, with all sorts of disgusting monsters, tentacles, heroine types, etc.

Most of the 90s are overrated, though. Too much "plot" and not enough fucking. The titles from those years are full of cockblock bullshit, too.
