Loser (Beck song)
Beck_Loser
Loser is a mockery of the alienated and apathetic Generation X of the 90s

“I was up in Olympia, Wash., and someone called up and said they were going to premiere the video,” Beck says. “The guy on the air was talking about all this slacker stuff, saying that ‘Loser’ was like some slacker anthem or something. I was like ‘What?’ I said, ‘Turn off the TV.’ I was like ‘Slacker my ass.’

“I mean, I never had any slack,” Beck continues. “I was working a $4-an-hour job trying to stay alive. I mean, that slacker kind of stuff is for people who have the time to be depressed about everything.”

Ian Curtis of Joy Division
ian-curtis
It's no secret that Ian Curtis was a bit of a weird guy but I am fascinated by this particular story about him and would love to get other people's thoughts on what exactly might have happened here.

From his wife Deborah's book "Touching from a Distance". Right after they got married in 1975 at age 18, three years before he was diagnosed with epilepsy and started having obvious fits:

>One night, I was in a giggly mood. I waited until Ian went to the bathroom and hid in the red room at the bottom of the stairs. When Ian passed the door, I leaped out and gave a loud cry. I was stunned when he scurried on all fours to a corner of the landing and cowered there, whimpering. Seconds later he was up on his feet again. He descended the rest of the stairs as if nothing had happened and resumed his television viewing. I wanted to ask him about the incident, but I could tell that he was completely oblivious to what had happened. I sat and watched him for a while and soon even I was scarcely able to believe what I had seen. I pushed it to the back of my mind once the moment had passed.

why did all female dream pop vocalists from the 80s-90s looks so lesbian, despite writing love songs targeted towards men?
I mean despite it Harriet Wheeler is incredibly beautiful but she still looks slightly lesbian.

>Not well-remembered today, Bubber Johnson, who was mostly a songwriter and composer for other R&B acts of the '50s as well as a sometimes actor, had his own recording career. After an inaugural disc for Mercury ("Time Was/Bumble Bee") in 1951 that attracted no notice, he moved to King Records and cut 30 R&B sides from 1955-59. His biggest chart success was the proto-soul ballad "Come Home/There'll Be No One" in '55 which was a top 15 R&B hit but he never achieved the crossover pop success of rivals such as Fats Domino, possibly because his focus was more ballad than rock-oriented. Johnson passed away in 1987 at the age of 65.

Good song, "Come Home" was especially compared to what a ballad usually meant in the '50s which was some kind of horrendous string orchestra arrangement (although the lack of that must be why Johnson never made white radio - Sam Cooke was better at selling his soul to the violin demons to get crossover hits and they ultimately called him home to Hell one evening in an LA hotel lobby). King never released a bad record back then.

>In 1989 and 1990, Mike Patton had been involved in a public controversy with Red Hot Chili Peppers' frontman Anthony Kiedis. Kiedis accused Patton of stealing his style in the video for Faith No More's hit song "Epic", off 1989's The Real Thing.[5] He made a controversial comment to Kerrang! about kidnapping Patton and cutting off his feet "just so he'll be forced to find a style of his own."[51] In the same interview, he remarked, "I thought what a drag if people get the idea that I'm actually ripping him off. Especially in the UK where FNM are much better known than us. In America, it's a different story, people are aware of the profound influence we had on them. But after it stewed in my stomach for a while, I just decided to accept it. He is just a kid. Besides, without his left foot he's going to have to change
>Mr. Bungle parodied the Red Hot Chili Peppers in Pontiac, Michigan on Halloween of 1999. Patton introduced each Mr. Bungle band member with the name of one of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, before covering the songs "Give It Away", "Around the World", "Under the Bridge" and "Scar Tissue", with Patton deliberately using incorrect lyrics, such as "Sometimes I feel like I'm on heroin" and "Sometimes I feel like a fucking junkie" on "Under the Bridge".[60] Patton impersonated Kiedis by wearing a blonde wig and speaking with a lisp. While pretending to be Kiedis, he mockingly said to the crowd: "Don't you call me Mike, my name is Anthony. How dare you make that mistake. Mike has been ripping me off for many years."[60] The other members of Mr. Bungle also satirized many of the mannerisms of the band, mocking heroin injections, deceased guitarist Hillel Slovak, deceased friend River Phoenix and their on-stage antics. In between one of the songs, Trevor Dunn (dressed as Flea) walked up to Spruance (dressed as the ghost of Hilel Slovak) and simulated injecting him with heroin. Patton interrupted this by shouting "You can't shoot up a ghost"

I've never understood the liking for rap or hip hop. All of it sounds completely gay and retarded. It's some guy putting mumbles over a digital snare beat made in five minutes with some bass sampling. We're on the 6,786th version of this same fucking song from 30 years ago.

It genuinely pisses me off how mainstream and popular this garbage is.

The Wall [Columbia, 1979]
For a dumb tribulations-of-a-rock-star epic, this isn't bad--unlikely to arouse much pity or envy, anyway. The music is all right, too--kitschy minimal maximalism with sound effects and speech fragments. But the story is confused, "mother" and "modern life" make unconvincing villains, and if the recontextualization of "up against the wall" is intended ironically, I don't get it. B-

Their most--in fact only listenable album in five years is marred by the sneaking suspicion that they're not doing it because they need to tell me this stuff but because it's the only way they can sell albums in 1975. And I'm not entirely sure I buy it, either. Best song--"All This Makin' Love", a frantic, Baroque simulation of compulsive sex. C+

Le 90s kids are dead wrong about Green Day's discography.

American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown are by far their best works.
>Style is much closer to rock/hardrock than punk/poppunk
>Lyrics are about things more important than weed and young crushes (e.g. war, corruption, revolution)
>Lyrics are also ripe with metaphor (e.g. military conflict for internal personal conflict)
>Song structures are more complex than simple verse/chorus and hence longer than 2.5 minutes (I consider Jesus of Suburbia to be the Stairway to Heaven of the '00s)
>More guitar solos and melodic riffs
>Wider range of sounds; from depressing and melancholy (e.g. Give Me Novacaine) to psyched energetic 80s rock (e.g. Know Your Enemy) even to proto-metal (e.g. East Jesus Nowhere)
>Even dip into other genres altogether and it works (e.g. Peacemaker, Viva la Gloria, Wake Me Up When September Ends)
Basedllenials cope and seethe in the comments. There's literally no musical argument that Dookie and Kerplunk are better, other than that that's when you were young so le nostalgia.

I don't understand the meaning of Bob Dylan's lyrics?
he won
So I've been listening to Bob Dylan's music more lately after watching a movie about him called A Complete Unknown but I'm not getting the meaning of his lyrics. I know he's regarded as one of the great lyricists of all time and won a Nobel Prize but I'm just not getting it. Can anyone here help me?

I can't listen to music
so stupid
I thought it was stupid when I was a kid, but forced myself to listen to music because that's what everyone else was doing and I thought you had to do that to have friends, so fucking dumb. Fast forward to today I haven't listened to music in over 5 months cos it's fucking pathetic. I listen to pure tones, 528hz sine wave. Nothing else.
If you need anything else you're a junkie, I can't even, right now you can't even pay me to ever listen to a music recording ever again. It's so sad how people do this, it's as bad as alcohol and coffee. It's weakness. I literally, after 5 months without music, I can't listen to it now. It's grating to my ears, my sensibilities. I feel like a moron if I put on any song. What is wrong with you people?

The year is 2035, America is now a corporate dystopia where the average citizen live to work 14 hour days in company towns owned by the elites while their culture stagnates into AI-slop. Europe as a result of Americas increasing isolationism and threats from Russia and the US on their sovereignty starts investing heavily into military and science and becomes a federated superpower to rival the former greatness of the US. To show of their newfound might Europe decides to invest heavily into the growth of the culture sector as a flex against the American corporate AI-sop culture and to further hammer own their Liberty a huge wave of blues and jazz revival sweeps over Europe. Trust fund pop dies out in Europe and instead the new big thing is improvisation heavy blues and jazz with a modern twist. The UK is now a tax heaven.
