>Not well-remembered today, Bubber Johnson, who was mostly a songwriter and composer for other R&B acts of the '50s as well as a sometimes actor, had his own recording career. After an inaugural disc for Mercury ("Time Was/Bumble Bee") in 1951 that attracted no notice, he moved to King Records and cut 30 R&B sides from 1955-59. His biggest chart success was the proto-soul ballad "Come Home/There'll Be No One" in '55 which was a top 15 R&B hit but he never achieved the crossover pop success of rivals such as Fats Domino, possibly because his focus was more ballad than rock-oriented. Johnson passed away in 1987 at the age of 65.
Good song, "Come Home" was especially compared to what a ballad usually meant in the '50s which was some kind of horrendous string orchestra arrangement (although the lack of that must be why Johnson never made white radio - Sam Cooke was better at selling his soul to the violin demons to get crossover hits and they ultimately called him home to Hell one evening in an LA hotel lobby).
