It's both, depending on the person. Like I said, the problem is when someone ONLY listens to mu/rym/reddit-core.

These type of people are all over the internet, and my point is that they aren't really engaging with the art any further than a top 40 pleb is. They're the type of person to listen to a highly rated artist in some niche genre, put them in their topster, and then never explore that genre any further. Then they tell others, "I love <genre>, have you heard of <artist>? No? I guess you wouldn't have heard of them, they're pretty niche.". Does that sound like someone who's genuinely interested in the art? To them, music is fashion, and their primary interest is in coming off as cultured looking down their nose at others. All /mu/ and rym have done is enable people like this to piggyback off the actual curation done by people with real passion for music.
