They add a LOT when it's a consistent, persistent group. One of the most enjoyable experiences I had for years was in vanilla WoW when everyone on my server knew eveyrone else, even across factions. You'd see the same guys every day, essentially your "neighbors". You'd have your guild, the other guilds you were friends/allied with, those other less-good guilds you laughed at behind their backs, the opposite-faction tough guild you knew were a thread, the weak opposite-faction guilds you laughed at openly and crushed every time you saw the, "that one guy who's always camping blackrock", "that one guy who's always camping stranglethorn", etc. It was a richly rewarding community even if you didn't do any direct deep person-to-person interaction. And "roleplaying" was not a factor, nobody in my greater circle I knew roleplayed, they were another subculture-within-the-subculture of the game. And because they, too, were always the same guys holed up in Goldshire, that made it funny.

"Megaservers" ruined the MMO experience more than anything else. Dwindling game populations caused developers to merge unique individual servers together into shared dynamic multi-instances. When fast traveled to Forest Village X in a game, no longer were you in *your server's* Forest Village X, with your server's population there, you were in Forest Village X Dynamically Instanced Shard #1493, and the players you saw there would be random nobodies you'd never seen before and never seen again. THAT'S your failure of "1000 extra people". The problem ISN'T that other people are of no value in an MMO, the problem is when they stop being treated as unique individuals in unique communities, and instead become interchangeable "gaming units", just like marxist principle considers workers interchangeable equivalent economic units with no respect to culture or national identity.
