OP here, I guess I should give my own feelings on the series.

>First Departure R
I know it's not perfectly representative of the original SNES game, but it really impressed me that there was a SNES RPG of this scale with branching story paths and individual & combinable professions. It was also a bold choice to make a new sci-fi IP and take the plot in a more Star Trek-esque direction rather than indulging in pure sci-fi.
>Second Story R
A faster, slicker version of First Depature. I guess it's an objectively better game but First Departure left more of an impression, if that makes sense.

What's interesting is that I have a bigger list of complaints with this game than any of the others (MP death, spending points to improve party AI, batshit insane item creation) yet I hold it in high regards second only to the first. It just has an ambitious quality to it that shines through.

Maybe this is controversial to say, but i think by this point the series has lost most of what made it unique (no branching story, watered down item creation) and it more resembles a sci-fi version of a Tales game. My biggest complaint is that the programmable party AI is not sophisticated enough to be effective in a lot of the boss encounters.

I like what it was trying to do combat-wise but didn't like the mechanic of stat boosts being tied to altered AI behavior. Plot and world design are severely, SEVERELY lacking.
