I don't think that's true. Even traditional-style CRPGs like the Pathfinder games differ notably from the classic 90s CRPGs like Ultima or the infinity engine games (though a lot of this is just the tabletop ruleset).

It's more fair to say that WRPGs have degenerated from traditional gameplay to "generic action adventure gameplay" like OP complains about. TES started as an Ultima clone with Arena and Daggerfall, but now it's Skyrim. Fallout was originally meant to be an infinity engine game using GURPS, and now it's a survival action shooter. Dragon Age was intended to be a spiritual successor to the Baldur's Gate series, and now we have Veilguard. Repeat ad infinitum.
