But then to make it good you generally need to have a party swap out or assists system in combat that actually serves a purpose.

It also shouldn't be tedious to keep the less used party members geared and skilled up.
If I'm playing something like Pathfinder, there's no fucking way I'm going to sit there and manage the levels and gear for benched party members because it's just too tedious and time consuming.

This also works fine in games that have "monster" allies like in SMT, Pokemon or whatever. Since you generally need to swap in the best monsters for the fight.
