I don't think it was the vast majority. Probably closer to a simple majority.You see shows like Looney Tunes, Animaniacs, and Swat Kats weren't afraid of sexualizing their characters. And even if the characters and shows weren't at all sexualized, the shows still usually had furries working on them.

Furries are just people who really like anthropomorphic animal characters. Making a fursona is entirely optional as is sexualizing the characters. All that's required is the obsession with said characters. Even those who do make fursonas usually don't actually want to be them. The fursona is an avatar the same an artist might draw themselves as a robot, alien, or anthropomorphized object, and the same way you might choose to identify yourself with an image of something else besides yourself online.
