Incredibly comfy. The River of Time is a massive improvement over the fist game, but I would still call the Dark Eye my favorite between those two.
Also:
>two handed weapons are much stronger than one handed + shield, high damage by itself allows you to get through armor and deal wounds
>wounds from piercing weapon skills are useful in the first half of the game, but later on two handed weapons completely outshine them
>bows are better that crossbows because you can equip arrows with extra effects, throwing weapons are shit
>heavy armor+parry is infinitely better than dodge, the latter takes too much time and stat points to become somewhat useful
>mages and elves can learn a few different race-specific spells - elves for example get a very good melee buff, while human can summon a skeleton (its melee two handed version is very good even in lategame, but a high level caster version is useless so don't waste skill points past a certain spell level)
>during the main quest you collect pieces of a special armor that allows casting, which turns a two handed armored mage into the strongest possible main character
Everything is viable though. My first playthrough was as a forester dwarf with a crossbow because his starting outfit looked fucking awesome, while my second playthrough was as a thief with dodge, daggers and throwing weapons because I wanted to test the shittiest options.

The River of Time has a bit more build variety - all thieves can learn divine magic of their god and you can make a druid dwarf with a set of unique spells.
