the ways games gave you more playtime for your money back then were

A lotta platformers combined #3 or #4 with #5, like mario warp whistles. I'd also note that replaying games back then was not like "speedrunning culture" today, it was something people did organically because you only had six games, and you had to settle into replaying segments to beat the game for the first time. It wasn't like you had spent 20 years fixating on the perfect game of Bonk's Adventure, just that you were 7 and that was the best game you had.
