As a matter of fact, the courts cared a whole awful lot. But courts are made up of people, people who have to live in a city full of so many thugs presently whipped into a religious fervor who have spent most of a year demonstrating how cruel they'll be to anyone, and any city, who doesn't SUBMIT and give them whatever they want. And if no one is going to protect them from the thugs, and the people who should will instead protect the thugs if they try to defend themselves against the thugs, they have no choice but to give the thugs whatever they asked for in the hopes that they'll leave them to live another day.
The jury was scared out of their minds that their city would burn again if they didn't convict him, and in all likelihood that's exactly what would have happened.
