Do not do this. Distractions only serve to delay the inevitable. What you must do is allow yourself to acknowledge, absorb, and process the emotions and feelings you are having.

If you constantly resort to distractions there will never be a root found: there's a root for every behaviour and reaction (adaptations). After all these adaptations are there for a reason, the question is finding that reason. Perhaps try this:

>When you are engaging in a behaviour or find yourself in that state, ask yourself "what am I doing right now?"
That will afford awareness of what is happening, simply by acknowledging it.
>Then look at the context in which it happens. What caused this behaviour in the first place?
This allows for the inquiry into the "why is this (what) being engaged in?"
>Ask yourself why. Do this five times, or until you find a circular pattern (do five steps first)
This will help to find the root of the adaptation.
>When at this stage it is possible to inquire to reality, e.g., "Am I really a hurtful person?". Many times these are just assumptions to reinforce a particular self image, unmoored from events. For example if you were a hurtful person you're unlikely to be willing to even ask that question. Then again, hard questions are often the ones which quarry the hardest truths.

Nero has made very good points too. Take this as a potential suggestion. Iteratively try what works.

On a side note: your mother is definitely engaging in behaviours that are not socially or culturally normative (going on assumptions). Consider their advice wisely.
