Because we used to think that access to more information would make people smarter but, much to our surprise, the opposite is true. The absolutely massive amount of information enabled by a sick system of incentives for media figureheads to lie and mislead has made people as stupid as they have ever been. This idea that the marketplace of free ideas would sort out the bad ones from the good ones and truth would rise to the top is absolutely false. The internet has made people retarded - and not just retarded, but epistemically devoid. Not only do people not know what is true and what isn't they've been completely robbed of their ability to arrive at truth.
