I'd say it depends on your age. To feel the way you describe as a young adult is perfectly normal and why students are often stereotyped as temporary communists/Buddhists and so on.
You feel pressure at that stage in life to distinguish yourself from others and give yourself a 'purpose'.
In most people, this desire for distinction abates as they settle into adult routine and discover absolutely noone gives one single solitary fuck who they are or claim to be.
The realisation that you're just background scenery for all but a tiny handful of people is a humbling and yet liberating one.
If you're well into your 20s and still feeling this way, I might suggest devoting that energy to distinguishing yourself professionally. While nobody truly cares about that either, it does permit you to improve your earnings and hence your life.
