Vet tech here, you probably won't find many vets here.
Vet work sucks ass, as you don't specialize in the way human doctors do - human doctors generally specialize in a specific organ or skill and hone those assets, or in GP where they are only expected to learn the base level of everything.
When a vet specializes, they will at best specialize in types of animals. So they still have to know everything from the workings of the brain to fungus living on the skin.
Vets also go into debt, and unlike doctors their jobs will not usually help pay off their debt for them and they don't make anywhere near as much money as doctors. They also have nowhere near the same legal protections as human doctors.
There is actually a huge issue with vet shortage, because of how aids it is to be a vet right now. It is so bad that some states are trying to bribe vets to come to rural areas with more pay or paying back portion of their debt. One state just passed a law to basically introduce a nurse practitioner to the vet scene; it would let a middle man prescribe, diagnose, prognose, and perform surgeries, because there aren't enough vets so they're basically just getting rid of the schooling requirement.
Vets have their own organization and hotline dedicated to try to get them to not kill themselves.
Vet tech isn't much better. I went to school to get paid minimum wage, and I have an expiration date above my head too. Most clinics just hire highschool girls to do the work I do, because owners are more likely to bitch about the price and how much hair your shaved off rather than the fact Shayleigh just mixed up Dexamethasone and Dexdomitor

The best way to help animals is probably make a fuck ton of money, and then use that money to fund something like Maddie's Fund. Doing it with your job will only trickle along, because you need to survive first and foremost.
