The books were written by humans, who claimed they heard the voice of "the creator" to scam normies into listening to them. Historians can track shifts in religion like changes in laws when a new king takes over because that's what they were used as. Religion is actually a primitive form of law, with shame and fear of direct punishment abstracted and made harder to argue against. If everyone thinks murder is wrong they can be convinced otherwise. If god thinks murder is wrong, get fucked. No need for complicated philosophical debates, just grug say god say so.

And now, christianity includes other governments like islam and mormonism, it's just that these ones are recent enough for people to remember what they really were: power hungry guys making shit up. They both claim the same "the word is the word, it is right because god allows it to exist" bullshit but the entire world still remembers what their prophets really were.
