You have to spend a lot of time with your hedgehog. I found that with mine, keeping her in a cuddle pouch helped immensely with the bonding process. They like to be petted. It's also best to get a young one as it will more easily bond with you than a rescue, as rescues frequently come from abusive or neglectful homes.

I had a rescue before and he bonded with me, but he was definitely more independant than my current hedgehog. He could spend all day in his cage entertaining himself. When I took him out, he would cuddle in his cuddle pouch and when exploring he would climb everywhere he could reach and would chew on my hair so he could annoint himself and smell like me.

He hated the smell of smoke. Nearly all hedgehogs do. They will huffle, pop, and hiss at smokers for this reason. My mother was a smoker. My old hedgehog was deathly afraid of her. My mom quit smoking. My current hedgehog likes my mom.
