I understand you point of view.
However, the real problem is not that the animal did not possess rare genes or that the lions needed to have a succulent giraffe meal.
The true problem lies in the fact that the zoo authorities, despite numerous offers to adopt the giraffe and give him a good life, still decided, against all logic, to kill him.
Of course, there are multiple reason behind this decision.
They did not killed the giraffe because his genome was of no interest, nor because they lack nutrition for the lions.
They killed the giraffe for two main reasons: money and cruelty.
For the money part, it's easy to understand.
Giraffe bones and organs can be sold for a very good price on the black market. And I have no doubt that the "zoo authorities" benefited from the unethical transaction.
The second reason is a bit more complex to peer through.
At the guise of educational purpose (practicing a necropsy on a fucking giraffe) they could kill an animal far bigger and stronger than themselves without any consequences.
The feeling of empowerment those "people" get when killing an animal or forcing two chosen specimen to mate gives them the delusion that they hold control over the majestic beasts.

If they really had the well being of animal at heart, the giraffe in all logic, should have been sold to another zoo or park. They wanted to control the destiny of that animal to feel that illusory sense of power. That's it.

Now, if you put the ethics aside, the giraffe could also have been feed to the lions in his entirety. Or released in the wild for predators to enjoy.
But then, selling parts on the black market would've been a bit more complicated.
