The woodland waterside ape theory makes more sense, especially since humans need to drink a lot of water and there's only one low risk, steady source of the nutrients our brains need - fish. And we know evolution does not demand and that species do not try to evolve. Speciation is more like an isolated community becoming unrecognizable than a purposeful act. The amount of intermingling between prehumans and prechimps indicates they shared some habitat. Possibly, chimps that couldn't climb good just lived near the riverbanks and the nutritional boost allowed those with the genes for better brain development to fully express their traits and gain a survival advantage.

Also, endurance hunting was literally a hoax.
