In my experience, almost everyone who has it made in farming are legacy owners/managers of huge crop operations. Rather a lot of them live in enclaves that have all the advantages and comforts of exurbia, except when it comes to the added distance to decent shopping and hospitals.
Personally, I'm not at all cut out for working with animals, but a natural when it comes to plants, to the point of noticing the weird perfection a certain corn farmer not far from me achieves it every year. Don't know exactly how he does it, but I know how he feels about it.
