Kek I have a story about this.
>get kicked out of school and get my first “real job” BOH at a Thai restaurant
>owner is insanely cheap
>paid cash and forced to take a shift meal, docked from pay
>if you don’t bring your own container owner deducts another couple dollars for having to give you one that’s “for customers”
>job sucks
>they just let all dishes from lunch service pile up and then you have to go in and do a whole day’s worth of dishes in 4 hours when they open for dinner
>but there is an upside
>whenever someone orders hot, or thai hot, the owner/ chef looks out of the kitchen and sizes them up
>”oh no, he look like little bitch. he get medium.”
>every. fucking. time.
>turns out they were afraid of people returning the food because it was too spicy (I guess that happened at some point before my brief tenure there)
>i am forced to buy a shift meal
>i cannot return it
>i finally get to taste ACTUAL Thai hot, and then double Thai hot
>owner is amazed i’m able to tolerate it
I remember crying while sitting on some steps and eating while waiting for my ride in the brutal cold, soaking wet from the dish pit and thinking “yes, finally. This is what I’ve always been asking for.”
When I quit I made sure I left on good terms, and now I have a Thai place in town where I can get legitimately spicy food, it’s fucking awesome.
It’s been more than a decade and they still remember me :,)

another notable story about their cheapness was this one day when my friend (who got me the job) complained that he was hungry while we were working.
The owner then produced a folded up movie theater popcorn bag that she just carried around ON HER PERSON AT ALL TIMES I GUESS, gave it to him and said “free refills. do not lose. you never come work hungry again.”
