The lessons are that they could pull this off because nobody remembered the original Strongarm, they can't pull this off with characters from the early years of G1 that people are familiar with. There wasn't a G1 Strongarm in the 80s.
They also pulled this off because RID15 Strongarm isn't a female version of Energon Strongarm, she's a completely different character that's just a reuse of the same name, making it closer in spirit to Beast Wars and the Unicron Trilogy recycling G1 character names for characters like BW Inferno, or Armada Wheeljack, that had nothing to do with the G1 original.

If they'd just continued doing things like this, nobody would really have a problem with it the way they do with taking well-known early G1 characters and just gender-swapping them.
