The truth is though to an extent many characters are like that. So much stuff in comics was done intentionally until it stuck, or reworked and reused. So many creative ideas are actually industry and marketing ideas that became entrenched. So many characters people say they like are characters with many poor series who kept getting pushed again or boosted by purposeful crossovers to get people from one book to another. The simple truth is, it's easier to reuse and try again than to keep coming up with new ideas. It's like the whole diversity shit, people always think that's forced where as in the past it wasn't, but in the past it was just as purposeful. After the original X-Men were cancelled they purposefully made the reboot team diverse to appeal to overseas audience, hence why you had team members from many countries. People just think when it's good it equals purposeful and when it's mediocre or bland then it was artificial. So really it's a question of quality and acceptance and not audiences understanding which is which.
