The show is depressing because from a factual standpoint, things have not really gotten better for the characters involved. Yes, certain things have improved (Simon let go of Betty, Fiona's world is real, a tiny bit of magic remains in her world, etc) but things are still massively fucked

>Betty is either still GOLB or is dead forever
>Fiona's world is now more or less identical to our world which means all of the shitty aspects exist with it
>Simon is still a man out of time and everyone in the cast will outlive him in one way or another

F&C really wants to be self-analytical just how SU Future was (both are trying to be like EoE and the Rebuilds) but we live in an age where the people making these sorts of stories don't have someone to remind them that they're making cartoons aimed at young children in a very particular pipeline, not vent art, not a diary, not a personal blog, or an autobiographical work. This sort of stupidity is exactly what leads to "le realistic panic attack" where something meant for kids becomes an immature adult's attempt at being deep except instead of something like the 90s where it was sex, violence, and swearing we get
