It's a thruster that's been salvaged and repurposed.
This show made me love salvaged ship designs, but no other piece of fiction has been so bold and peak as to strap a giant hair dryer onto a ship and make it a thruster for extra speed.
I reckon it started off with just the small ship, then the large scrap thruster was purchased. Then later it was overhauled and retrofitted into being able to disconnect.
Afterwards all those extra thrusters, engine, gun and hair dryer were added onto the large thruster to make up for the lost speed due to the living quarters on the smaller ship.
Shame the writers decided to make the show a drama of the day deal rather than have an overarching story, so much lost potential.
