Basically conservatives adopted the

mindset, and moderates and liberals thought that was neurotic and racist, which it was to varying extents.

So not demonizing moderate or at the very least non-militant muslims became a liberal talking point. The war on terror being so ineffective and winding up causing even more destabilization in the middle east lent further credence to that viewpoint, since it became easy to present islamic terror moreso as a consequence of western meddling than an implicit feature of islam.

Really that's the crux of the viewpoint, that the west causes most of its own problems and it should leave thirdworlders alone.
