Basically every oldschool lathe/mill with a gearbox has a soft gear to limit torque in case of a blockade of the main spindle to prevent catastrophic damage to parts.
There's usually no vibration and misalignment since these are precision machines with gears often running very slow and the massive cast iron machine casings dampening any vibrations.
If you have missalignment the soft gear will get eaten up quick, that doesn't really help.

Bro it's called "lapping" and is a manufacturing method when done intentionally. The lap is always a softer material and has grinding particles temporarily embedded.
