Let me reeee over this general question for a hot second, OP. Sewing, like literally every other production craft, has a very low entry threshold and an extremely high skill ceiling. I don't believe that any of us are ever really going to sew 'well' because none of us are dedicating our lives to mastering the craft.
A cheap modern plastic machine from Amazon is very unlikely to be able to sew multiple layers of denim, for that you'll really want something with some weight to it, pre 1980s. (This isn't being a vintage machine autist, just realistic.)
The most features you'll ever want from a machine is straight stitch, reverse and a good 3-step buttonhole. Don't pay more for decorative bullshit stitches that you'll never use.

Not if your starting point is cheap fast fashion garbage. High quality clothing should be an investment that you pay more for up-front and then maintain for a long time.
