They're not. European food laws are almost entirely political. They don't care about health. Otherwise they'd require transparent labeling like they do in America. Instead European food companies can just call whatever ingredient whatever they want. Amouranth for example is probably an ingredient you see quite a bit. It's not the plant, Amaranth is also the name of an artifical coloring which is legal in Europe but banned in the USA. You probably didn't know that because Europeans typically do not bother to research their own food regulations. Too focused on criticizing American ones which they don't understand either.
