Not really, no. Swimming is sorta like speaking another language. You can only really be "good" at it with lots of time and instruction from the time you're about 2 years old. There are exceptions but there's a sort of intuition or something that's very difficult to acquire later in life. Getting some good instruction and lots of practice will help get you to the point where you can swim laps smoothly. It's not entirely necessary though if you just want to burn calories and have fun.

Video yourself underwater, above water. Watch YouTube videos where they critique Olympic swimmer form. The major differentiators are body position (keeping your hips up, natural shoulder rotation), head position (chin down), hand position (do you push the water back efficiently), and recovery (basically are you doing some weird shit with your hands out of the water). You shouldn't worry about how your form looks to others though, just do it because you like to go faster. To guys that actually know how to swim, all casuals look retarded.
