Because that's how these manchildren were taught evolution in high school and they're interpreting the world with there stupid child brain. They think that "evolution took billions of years" means that every year in that time we were inching 0.00001% closer to where we are now, rather than the fact that all evolutionary change corresponded one to one with the rapid geological changes unfolding periodically throughout earths history. That biological as well as technological/cultural changes all happen very rapidly when the right circumstances emerge.
