If you really believe your ideology to be correct, you would think that anything else would be worse for the country, you are literally saving the world.
Stepping down would thus be morally criminal, how can you step down and let others ruin the country when keeping power allows you to save it?

Thus the only way to "save the world" is to fight for power tooth and nail, there is no other way
I believe this is the underlying logic of many dictators.
