All of that hinges on an overly literal interpretations and wish applications of the texts it refers to.

If you just look at this without an agenda to tailor it to, it seems presumable that the word "perpetual" simply means not temporary or conditional; that it should mean the union is inviolable forever despite any circumstances is an excessively literal interpretation. Not that it matters anyway, since the 10th Amendment says "the powers not delegated by the Constitution", not by the Articles of Confederation.
