Well it's a weird situation. The Republic of Ireland was built on the violent suppression of Republicans and the mass execution of Republican leaders-but ROI political leaders all go to 1916 Commemorations, Kilmichael Commemorations, etc.

Sort of a "have your IRA and condemn it" situation where the general line of thinking is

Part of the reason Irish "nationalism" doesn't run afoul of typical "nationalism is evil" is because it's left-wing in nature. Social equality, land reform, labour. But the ROI is an incredibly stagnant nation politically, and politics is seen as a way to sidestep the property ladder and get a cushy EU job. But worse than people hating the government, they are often quite apathetic. As for

Oh, I agree. Most would; but they aren't too sad about it. An actual full-blown revival of it is very far off, but I should have clarified that the reappearance of celtic or gaelic symbols or slogans in Irish fashion is more an independent thing; independent Irish artists are creating these clothes with the express intention of just making the symbols mainstream. I would agree-it teeters on the edge of LARP territory-but in my view (and that of most) we'd much rather have these things be around, known about, and visible than lost forever.

But like I said (and as you agreed), Ireland is geographically, politically, and economically sandwiched between two nations that outweigh it in every category.
