>How much did the IRA need?
The costs of funding the Provisional IRA for a year usually landed around £2-3 million. This number however is drawn from British reports, in truth the number may have fluctuated greatly in either direction-but it's safe to say a minimum of around £1.5 million a year for the IRA. But that isn't the only need for funds; families of IRA men who were in prison, dead, or on the run needed support, political leaders and organisers needed support (since they were actively suppressed), all sorts.
>So who funded them
While it's a shock to many, a majority of their MONEY came from Ireland and the UK, usually via businesses that the IRA or its allies ran. Taxis were an incredibly lucrative source of money, bringing in millions and millions for them. Bars and Pubs were another big source of it. "Legitimate businesses" that funnelled money to the IRA were huge.
>But what about the USA?
Despite what many believe, the role that "Irish Americans" or other American supports played is infinitely smaller than what is often imagined. NORAID for example raised around $3 Million in the 70s and 80s, which as we know would have barely covered the IRA for a year or two in what was a 30 year conflict. The main weapon smuggling route was via a literal Irish born ex-IRA man, not Bostonians or whatever.

Libya sent a fuckload. Gadaffi sent around £12 million, and they got a couple million from FARC in Colombia in exchange for teaching them to use explosives.

So, aye. Main source was domestic in NI, ROI, and the UK-businesses owned or operated by the IRA or their friends. Second to that is Libya, who bankrolled the fuck out of them for a bit. Other terror groups around the world contributed bits and pieces, but FARC's £2 million is the most I ever found. Mostly the deal was
