Yes, there's multiple occasions where chinese proved themselves smarter than westerners.
Up until the scientific revolution, they used to be one of the dominant pivotal point in scientific discoveries and had a very advanced system compared to their western and muslim counterpart. Even during the Qing China era, there were reports of chinese students being sent to America and surpassing every local student there.

The reality is that the Chinese, due to their sheer number, were and still are a very competitive people. Their very lives are centered around being the best in certain domains as it is the only way for them to excel.
