Every decade has a parallel image of itself conjured up by marketing teams some 10-15 years later. What we think for as the 80s was really invented in the early 90s when enough time had passed to get some outside-looking-in perspective on what was and wasn't going to be considered timelessly cool.

None of those things were considered cool in the 80s. They were considered cool in the late 90s by people who associated these things with the 80s. Same way zoomers today take some of the least popular trends of the 2000s and act like most people would've worn JNCO jeans in 2005.

No, this is a perfect example of what I mean. It's historical survivor bias. This aesthetic was specific to this location and this timeframe. Yet everyone acts like every city in America was painted pastel colors with sports cars everywhere. Nobody wants to remember the ugly ass shitboxes that were driven around or the tacky parts of 80s fashion. They only want to preserve the parts that have managed to stay "cool" 40 years after most trends were abandoned.
