Board: /ic/
"/ic/ - Artwork/Critique" is 4chan's imageboard for the discussion and critique of art.
I've always wanted to be a creative ever since I was young. I've day dreamed about being one and tried working my ass off trying to write ever since I was around 12. My parents tried pushing me towards it for school assignments. I also wanted to draw but never got into it seriously.
I've been wanting to write again for nearly 2 years now and have barely made any progress towards that goal. I've only done one little drabble like 2 years ago and haven't done any exercises since then. I've been trying to get myself to write, but all of it looks too complicated and exhausting for me. I've tried multiple different strategies, but they never seem to work. I've tried forcing myself to write, but can only make myself write a couple of sentences for barely 30 seconds before stopping and looking at my phone again.
I've never been able to complete a single multichapter story in my entire life and actually coming up with stories isn't much better. I can't think anything through and everything about trying to make an entire story looks too hard for me. I want to be a creative really badly, but nothing I've done seems to have amounted to much of anything. I want to become one so badly, and I want to stop wasting my life doing nothing.

the Dunning-Kruger Effect:
Dunning-Kruger effect, in psychology, is a cognitive bias whereby people with limited knowledge or competence in a given intellectual or social domain greatly overestimate their own knowledge or competence in that domain relative to objective criteria or to the performance of their peers or of people in general.
Essentially, the Dunning Kruger effect explains why incompetent people are unable to see that they’re incompetent.

4 damn years of my life, just drawing like everyone told me to, no guidance, doing proko and getting to the point I became a literal printer, all copying, that btw being able to copy and learning to draw is DIFFERENT, guess how you can learn to copy? By JUST DRAWING like an idiot
That is until I met a guy that unlike most retarded innate talented guys that couldn't explain shit about what they did by instinct told me what to do, I still suck ass, but people need to let others there's grinders that need to bust their ass to draw like the japanese, and there's people that draw twice a month and get a masterpiece for whatever bullshit reason, help the people you mfs, if you cannot explain what you do to draw, then you are just another innate talent baby that spent no effort trying to get good.
Permabegs exist because of a community filled with talent babies unable to explain art like toddlers, go ask Dave Rapoza and he will tell you he did the same fucking study 18 times till he got it right.

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**
Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.
General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.
**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly, keep discussion at a civil level.
>I came for anime. Why does the image OP say cartoons general?
To distinguish from the anime study thread (janitor supported). Please post your studies there and personal work goes here.
------
>Community Resources
>Tag the OP if you want a resource included here. for me, i would tell them to go back to gorging and indulging in their 69420th order of mcdonalds. Only SOUL allowed itt. And to kick it off, a fragment of Colleen Barry's commencement speech at Lyme Academy denouncing soulless art:
>“The problem with the Marxist approaches that now permeate academe (via post structuralism and the Frankfurt school) is that Marxism sees nothing beyond society. Marxism lacks a metaphysics – that is, an investigation of man’s relationship to the universe, including nature. Because it does not perceive a spiritual dimension of life, Marxism reflexively reduces art to ideology, as if the art object has no other purpose or meaning beyond the economic or political. Students are now taught to look skeptically at art for flaws, biases, omissions, and covert power plays. To admire and honor art, except when it conveys politically correct messages, is regarded as naïve and reactionary.”
Why you should not trust youtube shills:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VH1WEYF8rlA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Twy5Wo8m284
Do not worry pressure levels. 1024 is more than enough.
Remember to ignore all chinese shills. They often post paid twitter promos from random artists. It's all shilling, ignore it.
Recommended tablets:
>Screenless:
Used Intuos 3, 4, 5, Pro, One by Wacom
>Display:
Small (10-11"): Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite
Medium (12-16"): Samsung Galaxy Tab S8/S9 Ultra, used iPad Pro 12.9" Gen 1-5
Large (22"+): Cintiq 22, Cintiq Pro 27
Avoid:
>XP-Pen, Huion, Gaomon and every other Chinese brand making Wacom imitations
Poor build quality, pens with wavy lines, wobbly nibs, broken tilt, issues registering light pressure, terrible customer support, uncalibrated displays. All Chinese brands have the same problems. Check out the webm to understand how bad they are.
Do not be fooled by myths like "Chink companies are just as good as Wacom now" - they've been saying this for over 10 years, nothing has changed.
Chinese companies have also been proven to shill on 4chan. You will see dozens upon dozens of posts in this thread by a chinese schizo shill, who will either be bitching about the OP, gaslighting as a Wacom fan, making pointless spam posts or giving terrible advice (like recommending Huion). Just ignore and report him.
>New iPads
Massively overpriced and overhyped.
>Microsoft Surface Pro
More optimized for palm rejection than good quality drawing. Wobbly lines when drawing slow and straight.
>Cintiq 13-16"
Completely outclassed by the Galaxy Tab Ultra & iPad
>Cintiq Pro 16, 24, 32
Overpriced, QC issues, loud fans, proprietary mount interface
>Lenovo
Worse than Samsung in every way.

Post here if you don't expect your thread to reach 100+ replies. The picreal is the best model study I’ve done (according to me).
I’ll post what my current goal regarding drawing people, in response.
I felt stuck at my model like I couldn’t draw him correctly.
My gesture look bad although I studied from all YouTube and books sources + I used a lot of lined (my biggest flaw I tried to used a pen but same thing I used too much lines) + don’t look like the models
I didn’t study anatomy bc Proko, other YouTubers and books are telling me that it’s a bad idea to start anatomy without mastering gesture.
Honestly I feel drown out all the things I have to learn and what to learn = I’m lost. How do you approach being an artist and having (relatively) controversial political opinions? Secrecy seems futile in the long run, maybe even a bad idea since you'll end up with a lot followers who'd hate you and always being one leak away from the biggest shitstorm of your life. At the same time I don't wanna make myself a target for lunatic activists by being open about politics.
Why must there be so much bullshit attached to sharing your art online? Post your assessments, critiques but most importantly your work.

A place for anons going through any of Andrew Loomis' books to post their work and help each other.
>What the fuck is a Loomis?
Andrew Loomis was an early 20th century American illustrator. Now he's probably best known for the Loomis Method for drawing a head in any position. In his day he published a number of art instruction books which were some of the first that were reasonably approachable for the general public. In ye olde internet days before the millions of art instruction grifters they were a readily available free resource.
>Why should I learn from some dead guy? Is he really that good?
Yes and no. the fundamentals of art are pretty much the same no matter what resource you use, but he admittedly has holes and blindspots throughout his books and he's a bit wordy compared to modern art instruction. For my part I'm just a hobbyist who likes old shit and thinks it could be fun to actually go through some of them and see if I can grow from permaBEG-let to permaBEG-man.
>Ok, so what are his books?
Fun With a Pencil - His beginner book. You vill draw 10,000 of ze funny bald men und you vill like it. Kind of a meme at this point as the book that killed a million begs. I'll be starting here, but people are free to go through whichever one they want.
Figure Drawing for All It's Worth - Self-explanatory
Drawing the Head and Hands - This and Figure Drawing are probably his two most recommended books. They're more focused than his other books and are still really good resources for their topics.
Successful Drawing - A more serious fundamentals course than FWaP, but probably not great for absolute BEGs. A lot of information about perspective.
Creative Illustration -. Covers higher level topics that focus more on developing and following through on a completed illustration

https://youtu.be/5VSmFbB2sRA?si=9uIKCqGX9y8YybhQ Why so many masters in drawing draw really complex and skilled stuff and overdetailed stuff when they're 20 but end up drawing like the doro meme when they reach 40?
TRUE DYNAMIC SKETCHING edition
This is a thread for those who want to go through dynamic sketching as a group in an effort to improve drawing skills starting from the very fundamentals. Here we share the tedious grind, crit and encourage each others.
Please specify the week you're on and if it's dynamic sketching 1 or 2 when posting your work.
>What's Dynamic Sketching?
A class by Peter Han that focus on improving draftsmanship, construction and design. It is intended for beginners, but the second class can be useful even for /int/. It covers a wide variety of subjects, but not figure drawing.

\Course\Form and Construction\
IMPORTANT REMARK, for those who want to get the most out of this course:
There is an important distinction between SEEING the forms, and actually UNDERSTANDING the forms. When you see the forms, you are simply drawing from observation, which is what I've been doing, and I believe everyone in this and past threads. When you understand form, you can replicate it from your head, rotate it without reference, draw it in certain perspective, etc. This is the reason why the redesigns are so important and should never be skipped; they are in fact the essence of this course. Naturally, seeing comes before understanding. This is why I will be doing yet another run through dynamic sketching, first finishing the course in the way I have been doing (i.e. observational drawings mostly, with the redesigns), then doing true dynamic sketching.
I realized it by his comments in this video, at the given timestamp:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75apahP3Mvk&t=4664s [Embed]
the part where he says to not look at the finished ones, but at the primitive ones is what made me realize it.
It's a long road, but it's worth it. If you're willing to put in the hours, this course will teach you how to draw.
Mess up a lot, get that mileage in, but most importantly pyw

2: Character design critique and discussion is welcome.
3: Keep it fairly SFW. Lewds are fine but no explicit porn.
4: This is NOT a request thread. Artist Only. No spamming OC/infodumps for multiple threads without delivering.

Support each other and talk about your work or the work of others that excites you. Inking, character design, paneling / layout, writing, planning, and other discussions are all welcome.
Post resources, questions, in-progress pages, breakdowns of other works, etc. If a work is not yours, credit the maker (unless it's fucking obvious like a full page of One Piece or something).
Thanks to everyone for making /mmg/ a level-headed and helpful place. Remember, drawing and making comics and manga are difficult endeavors, and we're all in this struggle together.

OP image from Ichigo Mashimaro, Chapter 19, page 3. I'm reading this book, and it's really interesting, everything is super informative, but it fails to show a clear step-by-step process.
How do you guys usually draw poses?
This is what I’ve understood so far:
Start with an outline sketch (gesture)
Add a rough sketch (basic details)
Finish the drawing (add 3D form and anatomy)
I've seen some people use a mannequin first and then slowly add details until the figure is complete. I'm curious, how do you guys do it?
Also, are there any other good books you'd recommend? I want to learn cel-shaded rendering too, that would be really helpful.

Btw I'll be posting my daily practice here (I hope I can keep up)
So feel free to criticize and give me advices
Today subject was leg anatomy >start taking art seriously at 32 years old
>can draw six hours per day
>by the time I reach pro status 90% of artists are either replaced by AI or outsourced to the third world
>competition are rich kids who drew since three years old and drew 8+ hours during high school
>senior concept artist/illustrator salary at 80k $
>have to compete for a few hundred limited preproduction positions in expensive cities
>AI already does fetish and porn art
I don't cry anymore, because my emotions dulled. I'm just indifferent to it at this point. But at least we made a few people very rich haha. At what point should a person throw in the towel for their artistic dreams and write them off as wishful whimsy that'll never truly come to pass? Is it more over for some people than others?
I realize now that my life wasn't truly my fault and anything prior to 16 or 17 years of age could not have the blame ascribed to me. Unfortunately this might mean that since I've no social support, no connections, no place in the world, that it may be impossible to achieve anything in the end. Even after all the time sunk into drawing and my sunk cost fallacy carrying, I am still just a useless eater. Previous Thread: >>7497133

I've always loved these "cold" somewhat somber pallets but with unique color like Roxies blue hair here. General dedicated to posting and discussing art of either:
1. Manmade objects, vehicles, tool, weapons etc. (of any kind and any historical era, as long as they fall in the ballpark of "technology") and fictional derivatives of such
2. Objects, vehicles, creatures etc. that aesthetically fall into the visual space of mecha/robot/artificial/cybernetics etc. regardless of level of realism.
Helpful to mention the level of realism, if any, you are taking into account in the art. Can somebody explain exactly how you'd go about studying Vilppu? I've been recommended his resources and I don't quite follow. Do I want to try to really internalize what he's writing, or just copy his drawings like Bridgman?
Vilppu studiers, what is the a-ha moment you took away from his writings/lectures? No troll posts please. Characters by Veronica Vera "Taeshi". Characters by Veronica Vera "Taeshi". >over a month since I did pic related copy, it felt good when I was done despite it looking wonky

Should I just continue copying this same piece over and over again until something "comes loose"? I really just want to progress somewhat and it has to be kinda fun I guess. I think I understand why artists go insane I’ve seen plenty of advice here on using Twitter for promotion but what if I want to branch out to Reddit? I’m mostly throwing homework or stuff I don’t feel like finishing there. Besides cross-posting in a bunch of subreddits is there anything else I should be doing? What do you think about Krita? How do you rate it?
>There is one thing not to do, and that is simply to drift along with the daily routine, making no extra effort. You will soon find yourself middle-aged, having done nothing more than routine jobs, and being little farther along than you were years ago. The extra effort is the difference between the great mass of mediocre artists and the comparatively small group of very good ones.
>And in Art, study can never stop. You will find sketches galore in the studio of the good man, with the paint quite fresh. The mediocre artist's sketches are old and dusty.
>I have seen so many middle-aged artists still hoping, whose samples are frayed at the edges, and thumb-marked with time. Sometimes it has been a matter of years since they sat down and actually did something to give their hopes any promise. They are plodding their lives away at something they hate, and doing nothing about it. These are the men who never seem to have had a chance. The truth is, they never seized a chance.

Play with your neighbors, be creative and have fun! a trend I've noticed is women using their avatars to imply they're sexually crazy, and throwing too much private stuff out there.
It's kind of like posting pictures of your tits... sex baiting, I suppose you could call it?
It's like; being a girl on the internet isn't that impressive anymore, and hasn't been for a while, but being a sexually active girl on the internet?... Wowzers!
Hey /ic/, I'm currently working on a webcomic with some friends. While we've been working on it for about six months, we're still in the early stages and have accepted that it may take well over a decade to finish the whole story. Nothing has been posted publically as we want to have at least a few chapters finished before doing so.
That being said, some advice would go a long way while we try to work all this out. The first chapter has been sketched out, the process for that was basically a few panels were drawn traditionally per day, all the same size, and now that all the panels have been drawn we're now working to organize them onto comic page layouts digitally with panel sizes adjusted and then line/color it. Since we're still trying to figure out our "flow" this probably isn't the most efficient way, so if anyone can offer tips on how to impove the workflow I would appreciate that. Other advice regarding scripting/paneling/composition is also appreciated. It's easy to overthink everything but I also don't want to half-ass it. The few pros on this board: how many hours do you draw per day and how many when you decided to become a pro? Previous: >>7620247

I dont mean it in the way of getting uwu buddy buddy artist frens but rather as a way to actually get clients, Ive seen the advice of getting into Discord art servers constantly get thrown around and Ive wondered for a while if thats a good strategy, one would think that that only works for artists and that clients use other sites as catalogue.
Where do potential clients actually hang around looking for new slaves to commission to? Should you use solvents or are blending tortillions enough? Or just your fingers? Talk about it here. How do I draw transman scars? It seems like everyone is doing it these days. But do 2D artists have something similar like a 2D library of drawings they can later photobash to save time? Thread to study the female body. Post your art, discuss artists, and post resources related to the subject of cute girls and beautiful women.

1. Don't post too revealing works (especially porn). If you think it's too lewd, post a censored copy here and link to Catbox (https://catbox.moe) or any off-site that hosts images for your works. You may also link back to /b/.
2. Keep it to 2D Anime/Cartoon characters only. Do not post chiId photo references (legal or otherwise), and do not talk about issues regarding real children.
3. It is recommended to let the thread reach page 8 before starting a new one.

>Last Artist Standing (LAS): The original site, created by Lava (presumed dead, rest in peace). It has changed and ruined the lives of many lassies.
>Draw Every Day (DED): A short-lived site between LAS and DAD, run and abruptly cancelled by w.
>Do Art Daily (DAD): The current site, by the dadmin and developer banana.
