I’ve sold at New York Comic Con twice, once at New Jersey Comic Expo and once at Big Apple Comic Con. I’ve also sold for a small one day local con in my hometown for almost every year it was held.

At all conventions, I sold prints, comics, inktober zines, and took commissions. I made a profit from NYCC since it’s a 4 day show. I’ve also made a profit at the small one day show since it was very cheap to buy a spot. Commissions were my biggest sellers.

The NJ Comic Expo and Big Apple Comic Con I lost money on because table prices were expensive, both conventions were only 2 days long, and the crowd was mostly full of older comic fans that were there to see comic artists from DC and Marvel that have been in the industry for years. While some of my prints were of DC and Marvel characters, I also had a lot of video game and movie fanart. It also wasn’t very crowded at these cons, maybe because general ticket prices were $35-$40 a ticket for a 2 day show, while NYCC at the time was selling for around $60 for a 4 day show This was back in 2016-2018.

A table for NYCC was expensive, but it’s a 4 day show that gets a ton of traffic and a diverse crowd that’s interested in a variety of pop culture, like comics, cartoons, anime, vidya, movies, RPGs, tabletop games, podcasts, etc. I had commission requests for characters from Star Wars to VTubers.

Same with the small one day show. It took place at a local high school so most of my customers were weeaboo teenagers that only had enough for my cheapest commission offering ($10 for a penciled headshot on a sketch card) or for my small prints which I charged $5 each. The show was also only 5 hours, but with only a $20 table fee, I still made a profit from all the commissions and prints I sold during the time.

TL;DR, get an idea of the crowd that regularly attends a specific convention before you decide to sell there.
