For example, if you are trying to design characters for a 3D modeling pipeline, then gesture is worthless, and in fact, unhelpful.

To say one is more important than the other is confusing, especially for beginners. If one doesn't understand even the basic proportions of the figure, then gesture is completely worthless. Boomer academic instructors trying to emphasize this message in online courses with colorful language like "take note of this beautiful form! this beautiful curve" only serves to confuse and frustrate.

When you are learning math for the first time, you do not start with vector calculus.
When you are learning english for the first time, you do not start with Ulysses by James Joyce.
If you're learning to draw the figure for the first time, why should you start with applying movement to the figure before even learning the basics of what the figure is?

When learning to draw simple shapes and volumes, you don't immediately tell people to apply gesture/movement to them before understanding the basic principles of how to draw them. The human figure is the same.

This notion that learning gesture takes precedence above all comes from art academies who insist you must learn to draw quick gestures because the live model cannot be expected to hold a pose for an extended period of time. This does not apply to people learning from their computer.
