Less common than in your 20's, but I'd say that's more so because people gave up, or just naturally ended up in something else. Like with any job, if you've got the skill, you can get into it. I won't pretend age can't be a factor - ageism definitely exists, but we're talking about people in their 50's.

This said, it also really depends on how far you've got to go into your artist abilities, and how quickly you can climb skill wise. Are you really going to sit around doing nothing for 5/10/15 years while trying to get better? Where are you at now, skill wise?

All in all though, like the other anon said, Art is great as a hobby too. If you really enjoy this, it should be fine either way.
