No need to think too deeply about it. Just pick an appropriate font, make sure to only use two or three of them at the very most (it'd be better to just use different weights, rather than differing fonts), and learn what kerning (as well as leading, line width, etc.) is.
Because you're just doing the cover, you don't really need to give consideration to readability of the font, as you only need to write the names of the book and author.
Just keep in mind that fonts evoke differing feelings, and even time periods - That Harry Potter cover's text wouldn't feel nearly as appropriate, were they sans-serif.

If you're doing the blurb on the back of the book as well, that makes things a little more complicated, as you'll need to then give consideration to readability, as well as how well that font pairs with the cover font.
A quick trick you could do is use google's font library, which automatically recommends fonts that pair well together - so choose a font for the cover, and then have google's font library recommend you the font for the back blurb.

If worst comes to worst, just look at a cover you're trying to emulate, and use the fonts it's using, or pick fonts that closely resemble them.
