Yes they're perfect for colonial wars against people who can barely fight back. Look at Wagner in Syria or Africa or the different mercenaries in the Congo. If you're actually fighting a proper war then you're better off with volunteers and conscripts.

If your people are fighting for something they believe in they will bitch and moan but they will go through hell and back for it. You will never be able to pay a mercs enough to go through shit like Verdun, Stalingrad or D-Day.
